Tong Toddler Group

Tong Parent and Toddler Group was set up by local people who wanted to provide a space where parents, grandparents and carer givers could bring their children to play and where they could create a real sense of community for adults and children alike. The group is based in Tong, but is open to anyone on the Isle of Lewis.
A tremendous amount of work went into raising money to create and set up their space, which includes a kitchen, soft play area, wet and messy play area and breastfeeding room. Now, up to 30 children and their carers attend sessions on Monday and Friday mornings, where the children enjoy a range of play activities and the adults feel they are really part of a community.
They have opportunities to get involved in the running of the group, helping out and making friends. The group's biggest challenges were in the set-up stage and all the practical tasks needed to bring the project to life. Initially, the group only provided a drink and a biscuit for the children.
However, in late 2023, following feedback from adults attending the sessions, the organisers became aware that families were not eating breakfast and wanted to expand to provide a little bit more including free toast and fresh fruit. This has involved very little additional cost or additional work.Initially, a kitchen and large appliances were donated; toddler beakers, plates, bowls, cutlery and wipes were donated by a local shop and the group also received grant funding to purchase kitchen items.
Alongside this, the group organised their own fundraisers such as a raffle and a toddler walk and received financial donations. They also created an Amazon wish list of items that they needed, which made it easy for individuals to donate specific items.
The group estimate that running costs for food and refreshments are about £20 - £30 per week. The money for this, along with rent and other running costs is raised through donations from those who attend the group, fundraising activities and applications to grant giving bodies. Feedback has shown that people really value the breakfasts, especially as other groups do not provide them.
