"Queen Bees"

Queen Bees is a fortnightly group run by Volunteering Hebrides. Around twelve ladies attend each session and take part in activities such as crafts, gardening or a visit out. The sessions are free to attend and supported by one staff member and two volunteers.
Originally, the group ran from 2-4pm, with the focus being on the activities and serving light refreshments.
In 2023, as a result of the cost-of-living crisis, Volunteering Hebrides decided to provide a little bit more to help people fight food poverty. The session times were changed to 1-3pm and more funding was sourced to enable a light lunch to be provided alongside the activities. The group have access to a microwave, a small fridge, a good range of crockery/cutlery and a Wonderbag.
The member of staff who runs the group has a Food Hygiene qualification. Initially, it was expected that there would be a limited choice of food due to limited facilities, but a good variety has been offered such as a picnic style lunch, cheese and biscuits, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and soups. Ingredients are placed centrally on the table so that participants can build their own lunch. Difficulties in heating up food for everyone to eat at the same time have been resolved by the use of a Wonderbag, a slow cooker which does not need any electricity or power source. Where possible fresh salad and fruit are provided. These have been donated from local growing projects.
Current costs are roughly £30-£40 per session but could be done more cheaply with a more limited
budget. The initiative is funded by a National Lottery Community Fund Improving Lives grant as well as through grants from small trusts and local funders.
The group are really enjoying the new focus on food and look forward to finding out what’s cooking each session! Benefits for participants have included:
• getting to try new foods;
• having the opportunity to socialise around the table whilst eating, giving a real sense of
community;
• being actively involved in their own food preparation – e.g. making up sandwiches from the foods on offer and helping each other;
• being sure of a nutritious lunch on that day and saving money;
• having the chance to take leftover foods home with them – reducing food waste and saving money.
